Martin Jones is driving home after working retail on Black Friday when he nearly hits an elk in the middle of the road. A drunk elk. A drunk, talking elk. Martin is pretty sure he's hallucinating—right up until he discovers shape shifter Haven Clarke in his bed the next morning. Their awkward meeting leads to a friendship that quickly deepens, and soon Haven has to take Martin to meet his herd’s leaders. What Martin finds out may change his life forever.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Advent Calendar package "Heartwarming".

A Swift Herd for Solstice edition by Andi Van Literature Fiction eBooks

I read Andi's entry in this year's Dreamspinner Advent Calendar, Krampus Hates Christmas,, thought it was great, and immediately sought out Andi's other work. I found this to be another well-written, sweet, and funny story. It is not, despite what other folks say, an insta-love. There's like three or four weeks between our MCs meeting and saying "I love you." Heck, it's a couple weeks before there's any intimacy. We don't get to see the weeks of them seeing each other daily and we don't get to read those conversations, but it's not a fall into bed at first sight, declaring "I love you" once they come kind of story.

I have to comment that the one star review is very harsh and unrealistic for an anthology entry. I know, I know, everyone is allowed to have their own opinion and you can't make everyone happy. But the story is undeniably well-written and it doesn't have any typical shifter tropes. For example, there is nary an overbearing, macho alpha in sight. Writing short stories is incredibly difficult: how much time do you spend on world-building, character development, building suspense or romance (depending on the entry), and how deep into a plot line do you go? It's such a hard balance, and I think Andi did a good job with the length of the story. Could it have been longer? Absolutely. But that wasn't the point here. It's an anthology entry and I enjoyed it greatly.

A Swift Herd for Solstice edition by Andi Van Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Review posted on Books on Silver Wings blog.

This is a crazy, typical shifter story that starts out funny with Martin meeting a drunk Haven as a talking elk, but ends up with no romance and takes instant love to the extreme.

My first thought after reading the story is where's the romance? It seems like it is skipped. The characters jumps into the "I love you" routine immediately after they meet (as humans). Haven takes Martin to meet his herd's leaders also immediately after they profess their love. In short, there's too much commitment from Martin to the shifter community when I don't even see his love for Haven.

There is a surprise with the world building about different types of shifters and vampires. There are also interesting methods to try to get Martin to live the same life span as Haven so they can be together forever. However, the intrigue and mysterious air is lost due to the shortness of the book length. All the events in the story seem rushed.

Overall, as a shifter story, there's nothing special in this short story. As a romance book, this fails. However, it is a very happy-go-lucky story that's infused with the holiday spirit. It's guaranteed angst-free and so sugary, it may give you cavities.

I originally read this story as part of a Christmas anthology. It's a sweet short story about an exhausted guy headed home from his dead-end job when he nearly runs over a lonely and very drunk elk shifter. Their friendship quickly blossoms into something more, and Haven feels there may be something more to Martin. A secret world kept from most humans, there are rare people with the predisposition to becoming one of the gifted shifters. And that may be the key that will give their love the strength to grow throughout generations.

I loved the humor the author wove into this story. It gives the characters an instantly-likable personality. I even enjoyed the explanation given on how humans could undergo the transformation, and how the boys made their commitment akin to how regular humans would make their wedding vows; to them, converting isn't something to take lightly, just as their feelings for each other.

This really was a fun little story to read! It was particularly poignant when read with the rest of the anthology as the magic of the holiday season was alive and dancing around you like snowflakes. I enjoyed the author's writing style and really look forward to seeing how a longer story with more room for character growth turns out!
I Liked it it was pretty good funny even ..Will be trying another book from this Author.A soon as I can.
